Amir Hossain Amu born in the family of Md. Moazzem Hossain and AkhlimaKhatun on 1st Jan, 1940 of the then MohokumaJhalokati under Barisal district. He has a long political career and still serving as the minister of the Ministry of Industries.
Amir Hossain Amu went to jail for the first time by participating actively in Juktofront election in 1954. He became convener of all party alliance ‘Chhatra Songram Parishad’ to celebrate language movement in 1959. He has completed his graduation from BM College in 1965 and completed LLB degree from Barisal Law College in 1968. He took the responsibility of general secretary and president of Barisal district Chhatra League from 1959 to 1964. He also became convener of all party alliance ‘Chhatra Songram Parishad’ in 1962. He also became secretary of publicity of Bangladesh Chhatra League central committee in 1965. He participated in the 1962s democratic movement and was the active participant in the movement of opposing ‘Hamoodur Rahman Commission Report’ in 1963.
Mr. Amu was also the convener of ‘Convention Movement’. He became the treasurer of central Chhatra League in 1967.He was the convener of all party alliance election publicity committee in the election of Miss Fatima Jinnah in 1964. He has an active role in 1966s six point movement and had a significant role of publicity secretary in 1969s mass movement. He has completed graduation from the dept. of History under DU and joined actively in the politics of Bangladesh Awami League beside the profession of law. He was elected for the first time in 1970s ‘Provincial Parishad’election from Barisal sador. He took the responsibility of head of Mujib Bahini in the region of Barisal, Khulna, Patuakhali, Jessore and Faridpur. He was elected as the founder senior member of Jubo league in 1972. He was elected as the parliament member in 1973 from the election area of Jhalokati and Rajapur. He became the president of JalokatiAwami League and got nomination as the governor of Jhalokati. He got three years imprisonment in 1975-78 under security law. Government could not file any case against him and got bail from High court after an appeal. He was the chairman of Bangladesh AwamiJubo league from 1978-86 along with the role of youth secretary of Bangladesh Awami League. He became the president of Barisal and JhalokatiAwami League in 1980. Mr. Amu was the joint secretary of Bangladesh Awami League from 1981-92. He became a presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League central committee and led the movement against Ershad government from 1983-19990. Once again, he went to jail during 1996s movement against oppression. With the invitation from Saudi Arabia as king’s guest, he performed hajj in 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. He made numerous schools, colleges, madrasas, roads, bridges and culverts. He remains beside the natural disaster effected people and take care of their basic rights. Beside this,he was the chairman of Bangladesh Awami League central relief committee during the flood disaster in 1998 and operated relief work with much appreciation. He was the chairman of 50 years celebration committee of Bangladesh Awami League. This versatile political figure got nomination in 7th parliamentary election and became the minister of food. Again in 29th December, 2008 he elected as the parliament member and became the member of parliamentary standing committee of the ministry of Liberation War Affairs and Ministry of Religious Affairs.He attended at the ten days long 59th Common Wealth Parliamentary Conference as a delegate on 28th Aug. 2013 in South Africa. He took the responsibility of the ministry of Land, Disaster Management and Relief on 21st November, 2013 and once again take the oath as the minister of Industries on 12th January, 2014 till to date.
