Daab Chingri (Prawn in Green Coconut)



  1. Daab with Malai (Green Coconut) with a layer of kernel in it- 1
  2. Coconut water
  3. Medium Prawns (cleaned )-6-8
  4. Bay leaves -1-2
  5. Mustard Oil – 1 cup
  6. Onion paste – 4 tbsp.
  7. Garlic paste – 1 tsp.
  8. Ginger paste – 2 tsp.
  9. Green chilies – 5 to 6
  10. Poppy seeds (grounded) – 1 tbsp.
  11. Turmeric powder – 2 tsp
  12. Red chili powder – 2 tsp
  13. curd – 1/2 cup
  14. Sugar – 1 tsp.
  15. Salt to taste
  16. Whole wheat flour -1 cup


  1. Cut out the top of the green coconut with a knife in a round/square shape and keep the cut out part aside. Pour the coconut water in a separate bowl.
  2. Make sure the green coconut is full of kernel. Scoop out the ½ of the kernel with the help of knife and make a fine paste.
  3. Marinate the prawn with salt and turmeric powder, leave it for 20 min.
  4. Hit oil in a pan and fry the prawn .In that same pan add bay leaves onion and ginger-garlic paste, fry for 1 to 2 min.
  5. Add poppy seeds paste and curd, keep stirring. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder.
  6. Add the coconut paste and stir. Add salt and sugar and stir till the mixture turns into a paste.
  7. At last add the coconut water. Cook for a few minutes.
  8. When done add 2 tsp oil and silted green chili in the mixture. Pour the entire mixture over the prawns and mix it well.
  9. Put the prawns and mixture in the green coconut.
  10. Make soft dough out of a cup of flour.
  11. Place the cut out lid back into the coconut and seal the mouth with the dough.
  12. Place the entire coconut in a microwave proof bowl and place inside the microwave. And cook at medium power for 10 minutes.
  13. When done take the coconut out and reopen the lid.
  14. Serve hot with steamed rice.
