The modern world has added new construction materials. Structural basic materials have also improved a lot. The atmosphere of our country, especially during nine months of the year, usually preserves a temperature level of 38 degree Celsius. Bearing in mind temperature we started working on the sandwich panel for different infrastructures like shades, industries, offices, storage facilities, residential buildings, commercial spaces, stores or shopping spaces.
Sandwich panel is an engineering material used for walls, outer walls, and roofs of any building by making it 98 percent insulated, maintaining a comfortable temperature inside an enclosure like house or industry or office or a commercial complex.
Engr SM Anwar Hossain, Chairman of Advanced Group said in an exclusive interview with The Pages.
The following is the excerpts of the interview:
The Pages: We know Advanced Development Technologies Ltd is one of the pioneer companies in the real estate sector. After a successful drive in the sector, why you have introduced the sandwich panel?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: Advanced Development Technologies Ltd is one of the pioneers in the real estate sector. Out of hundreds of developers, we are one of them.
My expression is that every day we are learning and improving our capacity. The activities in the fields relevant to real estate can turn as vertical integration. And keeping this in mind, I think it is possible to improve the fields relevant to real estate.
It is now the age of technology, innovations. At present, we build infrastructure like buildings, offices, industries by using concrete, bricks, etc. These are traditional practice.

Precisely I can say a number of industrial shades in and around Dhaka, Chittagong, other districts, are usually made using steel frames along with CI sheets at walls and roofing. The temperature inside those enclosures where a large number of workers and employees work under an area of 100,000 sq feet rises to 35 degree Celsius if the outer temperature is 30 degree. Ultimately the working capacity of the workers reduces under such a circumstance. They do not get eight hours working hours because of such an unfavorable working environment. They become tired for hot environment and they feel suffocation.
In residential or office buildings or any other enclosure, we use ACs, where ACs need to be operated for eight hours during office time. If their walls and roofs were insulated, then we could save energy loss. Under insulated enclosure, if ACs are run for one or two hours, then there will be no need of keeping ACs on during rest of the office timing. This could be energy saving as well as comfortable.
The Pages: Would you describe in brief about the technology of sandwich panel?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: The raw material of the sandwich panel is Expanded Polystyrene (EPS).
While petroleum products are extracted in developed countries, one kind of bi-product is released which pollutes the environment. This bi-product through polymerization or chemical process is converted into a product known as stirring monomer, which we import at large scale from developed countries.
We produce a solid mask from these styrene monomers through high-tech process. We produce the big size of the solid mask. We determine the density of the mask keeping in mind for what purpose would this be used for.
Different masks of different sizes 10’ by 3.5’ by 4’ block is cut which later is sliced like a bread slice, as per the requirement of thickness.
For making a sandwich panel of different thickness, say 50mm or 75mm or 100mm thickness, the block is made for EPS with defined density. Inside the panel, the insulating material is placed and on its outside imported galvanized steel sheet coil is attached for the sandwich panel. This is a very high-tech process and done under hydraulic pressure.
The Pages: Would you please describe now its uses?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: It uses is mainly in an enclosure like the hospital where temperature and sound have to be maintained at a lower level.
For several decades, sandwich panels with EPS have been used successfully in fast track construction which has numerous advantages.
It is ideal for making plant sheds, low-cost houses, greenhouses, cold storages, emergency shelters, hospitals, factories, office and commercial complexes, homes, studios which need to be made heat and soundproof.
It is a cost-effective solution and enclosures can be built in the fastest possible time. The technology is energy efficient, heat and soundproof and their design are flexible with multiple color finishes and fancy look. EPS is also an eco-friendly material, non-absorbent to moisture, comfortable in a high humid atmosphere and secured from any natural calamities. Sandwich panels have a long life, lightweight, less maintenance and re-usable.
The Pages: Can this technology be used in distinct villages of our country?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: Vertical integration and technology innovations will help improve rural lives by replacing traditional semi-packa homes. Sandwich Panel is
the next generation solution for energy-efficient & functional constructions. This would facilitate a fantastic accommodation in villages at low-cost and less time.
While building ten to 20 story buildings in urban areas, we usually use brick. If we use a sandwich panel in making walls, the walls will be like the concrete wall but the weight on the buildings will reduce by 70 percent. Besides, the house will be made an insulated enclosure.
EPS offers an exceptionally lightweight solution. We have machines that produce blocks with different dimensions. From these blocks, all required plates will be cut.
The Pages: Is EPS sandwich panel is popularly used in other countries?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: I have seen this technology is widely used in Argentina, Brazil and other North American countries, Central Europe, Australia, China, Southeast Asian countries. Homes are rapidly built using EPS sandwich panels in those countries and the use of EPS in Latin America is a traditional practice.
The Pages: What are diversified use of EPS?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: Despitebuilding homes, factories, offices, EPS can be used for constructing roads, floating houses, gardening on water, etc. In developed countries, EPS of specified density is used in constructing roads.
In Holland, a large amount of flower is cultivated on floating gardens over water bodies like rivers. The garden is developed on floating land made by EPS.
In Bangladesh, there are lots of water bodies and 40 percent of land always is submerged in water. We can introduce a crop-growing floating farming system. It would cost Tk 5,000 to develop a one-Katha garden. These systems would work better in coastal areas.
The Pages: Would you please share your future business plan?
Engr SM Anwar Hossain: Traditionally burnt-bricks are used in our country. In true sense, nowhere in the world there are burnt bricks. These bricks are sub-standard for their poor strength and water absorption capacity. These are not confirmed as per basic engineering.
Kilns pollute the environment. Besides, they are spoiling arable lands as top layer fertile soil of the land is used in kilns, which is reducing farming land.
Considering this, we have initiated making concrete bricks to replace burnt bricks.
